An SRV record, which is short for Service record, is a DNS entry that is used to define the servers which run a certain service for a domain name. In other words, you can use your Internet domain not just for an Internet site, but also for an instant messaging server, a video streaming host or a Voice-Over-IP server, for instance, while you still have an Internet site with it. Whenever you set up the SRV record, you can select what Internet Protocol it's going to employ, on which port the connection to the specific server will be established as well as the priority and the weight of the record assuming that you have several SRV records for the very same service. The second option allows you to use different machines for load balancing and redundancy. With this kind of DNS records, you can use the same domain for various purposes and even with different providers if the same one cannot provide all services you need.

SRV Records in Hosting

If you host a domain address within a hosting account from our company and we manage the DNS records for it, you are going to be able to set up a new SRV record with a few clicks inside the DNS Records section of your Hepsia CP. Our intuitive interface makes it much simpler to set up a new record compared to other web hosting Control Panels, so if you require an SRV record, you'll only have to fill a couple of boxes and you'll be ready. This includes the protocol and also the port number, the value i.e. the actual record, the priority plus the weight. For the last two you may set any value in between 1 and 100 depending on which server you want users to access first or what recommendations the other company has given you. As an added option, you can choose how long this record will be active after you change it or delete it - the so-called Time To Live time, that’s measured in seconds. Unless requested otherwise, you may leave the default value there.

SRV Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

Setting up a completely new SRV record for every domain name hosted inside a semi-dedicated server account on our end is going to be very easy and will take no more than a few clicks via a user-friendly interface. Using the DNS management tool inside your Hepsia website hosting Control Panel, you could make any record that you need and once you select SRV as the type, several additional textboxes will appear on your screen. There, you'll need to enter the service, the protocol, the record value and also the port number and you will be ready. Optionally, in case the other service provider requires it, you will also be able to set the weight and priority values if they have to be different from the standard value, which is 10. The range for those 2 options is from 1 to 100, so you've got quite a lot of possibilities if you use a large number of servers for a specific service. You may also define how long the new SRV record will remain live in case you remove it in the future by setting a TTL (Time To Live) value for it. By default, the TTL is 3600 seconds.
